IF NOBODY EXPECTS too terribly much of you, you find yourself in an enviable position. If you do poorly, no one condemns you and you get credit for trying. If you do passably, it looks even better than a really good job done by someone of whom much was expected in the first place. And, if you actually do well, you get praise out of all proportion. Youth is the time to make mistakes. You can bite off more than you can chew and still, people are slow to wrath and quick to forgive.
It starts again when you, as an older person, attempt things generally considered within the province of stripling youth. At a recent athletic competition, no matter how I did, I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. It's great to have, at least once when you really need it, a Get Out of Jail Free card.
