The tiny charges of the Berkeley pre-school cooperative "Shimmy-Shimmy Co-co-op" gathered for an outing to the Martin Luther King Middle School Edible Schoolyard. To put some perspective on the visit, they were told, "People come from all over the world to see this garden." The field trip was prefaced with a globe of the world, on which the children identified where they lived, and just where "all over the world" might be. These are bright, attentive children, but quite young--some scarcely out of diapers. The abstract notion that they live someplace on a ball that is represented by a ball that they are holding in their hands may or may not get through intact, but at least they have been confronted with the information, and next time they hear it the idea will, at the least, be somewhat familiar.

So the gaggle of wee little ones ambled to the garden hand-in-hand, and arrived at the Edible Schoolyard where, to the adult's astonishment and gratification, there was a delegation of people from forty different nations listening to Alice Waters talk about the project and its impact on education and school lunches, and eating food that had been grown in the garden itself. The People From All Over The World were equally delighted to see real, live children in the garden, and asked them questions and got plenty of amusing and informative answers. The little ones ate garden-grown snacks, the adults watched the little ones eat and frolic, the outing was a success, and everybody went home happy.
