"Soul, thou has goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry."

-- Luke 12:19

Forty is a magic number that basically indicates "a long time," or "a whole lot." The rains of the Flood fell forty days and forty nights. and another forty expired before Noah opened the window of the ark. Moses was in Mount Sinai forty days, and the Children of Israel wandered in the desert for forty years until they at last came to the promised land.

Forty years is a decade longer than one human generation. I have worked as a printer at the same location for forty years, but it doesn't seem like such a long time from this end. Perhaps that's part of the magic.
